Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT)  funds and operates a range of programs aimed at protecting wilderness and wildlife in Eastern Africa. Their success comes from promoting sustainable economic benefits to the local Maasai community, thereby encouraging their active participation as stewards of our critical ecosystem.

MWCT has achieved one of the most effective years in recent history in terms of reducing incidences of illegal poaching and wildlife killing resulting from predation on livestock in the ecosystems in the region. Also after nearly 6 years of developmental work, MWCT’s Chyulu Carbon Trust partnership successfully completed validation and verification of their carbon project for the Chyulu Forest and it is now a registered REDD+ / VCS standard listed project generating sellable credits.

To ensure that community benefits from conservation continue in perpetuity, MWCT is developing sustainable financing mechanisms, primarily around payment for ecosystem services. LDF’s continued assistance will further aid their successful community engagement conservation approaches.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
