Approximately 37% of California’s annual statewide GHG emissions come from cars and trucks, which is why Governor Brown has pledged for the State to reduce petroleum use by 50% by 2030. Zero-emission vehicles, including both fuel cell and battery-electric vehicles, will play an important role in achieving this mandate.
The State of California has committed to building the infrastructure necessary to support a successful rollout of hydrogen-fueled vehicles, and has mandated that Zero Emission Vehicles account for 15% of all new vehicles sold by 2025. But the consumer market for Hydrogen Electric Vehicles has barely emerged. Launched just last year, the marketplace for FCEVs is in its infancy. As yet, there is little consumer awareness of this technology and even less consumer demand. This means limited investment in infrastructure and limited investment in manufacturing.
Energy Independence Now (EIN) is dedicated to combating climate change and mitigating the negative health impacts associated with air pollution by advancing zero emission FCEVs and supporting hydrogen-fueling infrastructure. Currently there are roughly 1,300 FCEVs on the road in California. With EIN’s dedicated support, this number is projected to grow to 13,500 vehicles in 2019, and 43,600 vehicles in 2022.
Through the support of LDF, EIN will continue to develop its activities, which includes the expansion of hydrogen fueling infrastructure and the education of the public on hydrogen vehicles through ZEV incentives in the state of California.
