Building The Largest Nature Reserve in The Continental U.S.

American Prairie Reserve (APR) plans to create the largest nature reserve in the continental U.S. by stitching together a protected area five thousand square miles in size, or 3.2 million acres, by purchasing approximately 500,000 acres of private land and linking it with nearly three million acres of existing public lands.

This expanse, one and a half times larger than Yellowstone National Park, is the area recommended by conservation biologists to support the full array of species historically present on the landscape.

APR hopes to be a catalyst in the effort to bring many wildlife populations, such as mule deer, white-tailed deer, big horn sheep, elk, cougars, and grassland birds, back to significantly larger populations than currently exist in the region.

Through collaborative partnerships, we support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. Our work is divided into six main program areas – Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation, Climate Change, Indigenous Rights, Transforming California, and Innovative Solutions.
